Many filmmakers have attempted to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby - arguably the greatest book ever written - to the big screen, but thus far nobody has been successful. The most notable attempt came in 1974 when director Jack Clayton tried his hand at it. Despite bringing together a terrific cast that included Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Bruce Dern and Karen Black,, the movie still couldn't match the power and brilliance of the original story. That, of course, puts a lot of pressure on Baz Luhrmann, whose own adaptation is set to come out at the end of this year.
