Movie Review: Joyful Noise

Joyful Noise, a squeaky-clean pop-gospel fairy tale featuring Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in canned catfights, reflects the inspiration of Glee and God, in that order. The Glee side, at least in my book, doesn't exactly amount to a recommendation, but it does mean that the movie's musical numbers are catchy and rollicking and, in their bright sunshiny way, rather soulful. In the small town of Pacashau, Ga., times are hard — every other storefront is empty — but the Divinity Church choir has lifted local spirits by rising to become a semifinalist in the National Joyful Noise Competition.

'Contraband' does legitimate business at box office

'Contraband,' starring Mark Wahlberg, opens at No. 1, ahead of the 3-D 'Beauty and the Beast' reissue and 'Joyful Noise.'

Mark Wahlberg had the biggest opening of his career as an action star this weekend, as his crime thriller "Contraband" was the No. 1 pick at the box office.

The film about the ugly world of drug smuggling was the most popular movie over the four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend, grossing a solid $28.8 million domestically, according to an estimate from distributor Universal Pictures.

Queen Latifah Touted by Will and Jada Smith as the Next Oprah

Is Queen Latifah the next Oprah? Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith seem to think so.

Sony Pictures Television announced last Monday that it's working with the power couple's production company, Overbrook Entertainment, to create a syndicated talk show which would be hosted by Latifah.

Overbrook president Miguel Melendez gushed, "We have known and admired Latifah for over 20 years: dating back to our music days, to her first television role on 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air', and years later when she worked with Jada on the film 'Set It Off'."
