‘Star Trek’ Sequel: Early Tracking Suggests $85 Million Launch

“Star Trek Into Darkness” is about to go where no “Star Trek” has gone before at the domestic box office. According to early tracking, Paramount’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” opening three weeks from Friday on May 17, is gearing up for a stellar $85 million opening, which would mark a record debut for the sci-fi franchise.

Analysts suggest the 3D actioner could exceed $90 million, depending on word of mouth. Pre-release buzz has been building steadily for the film starting as early as December when Paramount released the film’s first teaser trailer.

First Very Short Clip from Star Trek Into Darkness Features Zachary Quinto as Spock in a Volcano

The first clip for director J.J. Abrams’ sequel Star Trek Into Darkness has been released. It features star Zachary Quinto in costume as Spock, donning a protective suit as he is seen in the heart of a volcano. Fair warning: the clip is a literal blink of an eye since it’s three frames long. Abrams and Conan O’Brien had a big laugh at the expense of all of us nerds (and tired bloggers) out there, but we’ll take what we can get.

Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto hopes he inspired others to be open about their sexuality by 'coming out' as a gay man last year (11).

Zachary Quinto calls “Star Trek 2″ “bigger” and “bolder”

Do we know the actual title for “Star Trek 2″? No. Have we learned what villain Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing? Not a chance. But at least we now know what Zachary Quinto thinks of the new movie.

The Wrap recently sat down with Quinto to talk to him about the J.J. Abrams-directed flick, and he was surprisingly candid about it. Maybe now that he’s done shooting he feels he can open up about the project a bit more.

Spock Borrows Some Of Iron Man's Armor In New Star Trek Sequel Set Photo

If you’ve been following the news today you know that the Joss Whedon-directed The Avengers looks like it will be opening huge. Armed with ridiculous awareness statistics, the movie has a very real chance at beating the opening weekend numbers of The Hunger Games, which, you might remember, currently holds the number three spot for all time opening weekend numbers. Much like how the success of The Dark Knight made people start thinking that dark and gritty is the way to go for all big action movies, perhaps now we can expect some big movies to try and imitate The Avengers style.
