Synopsis: From Ricky Gervais, the award-winning creator and star of the original BBC series “The Office” and HBO’s “Extras,” comes the new romantic comedy “The Invention of Lying.” “The Invention of Lying” takes place in an alternate reality in which lying—even the concept of a lie—does not exist. Everyone—from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street—speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark Bellison (Gervais) suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

MPAA Rating: THIS FILM IS RATED PG-13 FOR LANGUAGE INCLUDING SOME SEXUAL MATERIAL AND A DRUG REFERENCE.

It was alright. I was a little dissappointed in how this movie unfolded. I love the office...but this was even worse than Gervais' Ghost Town.

I thought this movie was pretty good and quite funny. It definitely kept me laughing the whole time. The movie was quite interesting I like the humor. I have always been a fan of Louis and Ricky.

The premise of the movie made me think about what we say to each other, which may not be completely truthful. I enjoyed the movie for that reason (i.e., making me think about what we say). However, the storyline then started to wander into the idea that we don't say what's on our mind, which is a slightly different concept. So, the latter part of the movie, from the time that Ricky Gervais "pre...more

This movie started out very fresh and funny. The audience turned when the "heaven is a lie" concept was introduced. In Texas, people believe heaven is real. The audience would have been behind any other grand lie but this. And if heaven is a lie, what was the purpose of the church in this society? The people in the movie then started behaving like children. It would have been better if they ...more

It was a great movie, very typical to the humor Ricky Gervais does. I loved it! It was hilarious and they pulled off the plot very well. Of all the places they could have taken the story line, I was happy with the direction of the movie.

The intro scene is hilarious! The part about her masturbating before the date was too funny. And I really like the Q&A with the main character regarding what he knows about what happens after you die. That part cracked me up.

Thought opening scene was amusing. Didn't know if this was a parody of religion or sarcasm. It was entertaining and an interesting thought to not lie.

Here’s another Ricky Gervais pet project (co-writer, co-producer, co-director, star),… aimed at his loyal fans and RomCom junkies. In this project,… he takes an easy, parallel-universe premise of “inventing lying”,… enacts it,… and immediately kills it, over and over. There are plenty of negatives, like complete predictability, giant plotholes, bland direction, a corny voice-over, fl...more
