Peter Jackson, director of the “Hobbit” movie franchise, announced on his Facebook page Thursday morning that the third and final “Hobbit” movie has a new name. Sony Pictures Entertainment, Mattel and Parkes+MacDonald/Image Nation today announced a partnership on a live-action comedy featuring the beloved and dynamic icon Barbie. The studio sees this as its next big, global franchise and plans to go into production by the end of the year. Written by Jenny Bicks and produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, the film will be executive produced by Parkes+MacDonald’s president Marc Resteghini alongside Julia Pistor, who will executive produce for Mattel’s Playground Productions.

Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Russian Hockey Doc ‘Red Army’

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all North American, Eastern European and Asian rights to “Red Army,” on the heels of the sports documentary being tapped for the Cannes Film Festival’s Special Screening Section.

The film, directed by Gabe Polsky, centers on the Red Army hockey team from the perspective of its captain Slava Fetisov and his transformation from national hero to political enemy.
