Channing Tatum to Direct Magic Mike 2? Says the Sequel is a Road Movie

We previously reported that a sequel to Magic Mike was in the works after the success of the original film, but now it looks like star and producer Channing Tatum may find himself in the director’s chair for Magic Mike 2. Since director Steven Soderbergh is planning on retiring from filmmaking and headed towards TV land, he presumably wouldn’t be returning for the sequel which leaves the spot open. Tatum recently spoke about the possibility of him assuming the director’s role alongside screenwriting partner and producer Reid Carolin. Carolin, meanwhile, leaked a few details about the plotline the sequel would follow.

The German site Filmstarts (via The Playlist) recently spoke to Tatum and Carolin about the plans for a sequel. While Tatum has now worked on three Soderbergh films (Haywire, Magic Mike, The Bitter Pill) with ample time to learn from the director, it’s also possible that Gregory Jacobs (Criminal), Soderbergh’s long-time assistant director and producer could end up with the job.

As for what the potential sequel would actually be about, Carolin went on to describe it as:

“You know, we are talking a lot about it. We have a story, and it is really ridiculous and fun. It’s a road movie sort of thing, where a bunch of strippers get back together. It’s more of a broad comedy. I don’t know whether it will happen or not.”
