Lots of Mike, Little Magic
Hi friends I haven't friended yet! We haven't met but I'm @jenfriel and I'm super stoked to be bringing you some deets on what flicks to watch based on the likelihood that taking a date to it will get you laid.
This week I saw Magic Mike. (Great way to start out, eh?)
I gotta admit, I was pretty stoked about seeing this flick but was sadly left a bit disappointed. Magic Mike is (loosely) based on the life of star/producer Channing Tatum and his days spent as a stripper. The film is directed by Steven Soderbergh and features a thong wearing Matthew McConaughey in a role he was born to play.
The eye candy throughout the movie sadly fails to make up for the fact that the story arc just wasn't strong enough. Channing's character battles the balance of what you do versus who you are intertwined with two love triangles that wasn't interesting enough to carry the film. Olivia Munn (who was surprisingly good) was definitely a stand out - but her character's storyline as a glorified sex buddy could have been cut in half. If Channing was truly into the girl that is his "love interest" why would he still be pursuing something with Munn? It didn't make sense.
The exposition in the first act was overwhelmingly elementary but maybe this was what the film was going for considering its star's emotional range. I'm a big fan of Soderbergh and while his style was definitely imprinted on the film - everything else just went flat. (Minus Munn's chest which is on display in the first few minutes.)
This film will ABSOLUTELY get you laid but I'm not sure even sex makes it worth it. Catch the dance scenes on YouTube - but other than that don't waste your time or money.

this movie is not based on his life in any way. he got the part because he was a stripper before he made it. A lot of people are having issues getting this and it has ruined the movie for a lot of people. He was a stripper and then a model before becoming an actor, he didnt make furniture and try to sell it.
