The Expendables 2: Scott Adkins Loves Being The Bad Guy

In a movie jam-packed with one-liners, over-the-top action sequences and humorous undertones, there's a lone straight man that couldn't go one frame without shooting, stabbing or trying to kill someone. While Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis continuously referenced each other's back catalogues; British actor Scott Adkins kept his character dangerously business as usual. Playing Hector, the volatile right hand-man to Jean Claude Van Damme, Adkins dressed in all black, touted a heavy Russian accent and oozed a particular brand of heartlessness.

Adkins spent most of his youth balancing an interest in martial arts and theater. Upon building his reputation in a slew of international action films, he slowly washed up stateside with guest roles in "The Bourne Ultimatum", "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and the highly anticipated December release of "Zero Dark Thirty". Joining the legendary cast of "The Expendables 2" allowed Adkins to flex some muscle while sharing some screen time with an old friend. "I've actually worked on four movies with Jean Claude and it was good to work with him again. He's in amazing shape and it's fun to train with someone so committed," he says. "I hope he's not sick of me by now."

Growing up in the 80s, Adkins was no stranger to the action heroes who would one day become his dream co-stars. "Especially for me, growing up and watching all these guys. I wanted to do the same thing they were doing - be an action star," Adkins admits. Despite initial feelings of intimidation on set, he eventually found ease being the antagonist. "It's always fun to play the bad guy. They have all the fun and get to say the most outrageous things."

With the film opening this Friday, Adkins understands that there's a void in the market for big time action movies. "With this film, it proves that audiences miss real action. CGI and special effects are great, but people miss real actions stars." At the end of a long and comic book fueled summer, Adkins couldn't be more correct. Especially when Jason Statham's character Lee Christmas puts on a pair of brass knuckles and mutters, "Nothing beats a classic".

The Expendables 2 invades theaters this Friday, August 17th.
